Ankle Pain and Adjustment
• Your ankle joint is a very complex joint; it is formed by the two bones of the lower leg and the bones in your foot. Pain in your ankle can result from a number of different causes. Most commonly it can be from simple overuse or overstretching i.e. twisted ankle. This can cause a strain or sprain with associated tendonitis and bursitis. If left unattended this can become a chronic problem and you may experience difficulty walking. If there is significant swelling use ice, some mild compression with an ace bandage or brace and keep your ankle elevated.
• X-rays help you to identify osteoarthritis or fractures in the ankle but depending upon your age problems may be associated with the soft tissues. A good clinical exam and history can give good insight into the soft tissues but only an MRI can evaluate the anatomy of the soft tissues i.e. tendons and ligaments of the ankle.
• Treatment is generally fairly straightforward and MRIs are generally not necessary. Good supports and a good treatment program with strengthening can generally resolve most problems without surgery.
• When your ankle is in acute pain use ice and heat at home as instructed by Dr. Humberstone. If there is swelling always use ice.
